Hello, While thinking about this Group this morning, I decided to search the archives for my husband's PACHECO / MOURA names. I found a posting from one year ago that discussed the MOURA name from Santa Maria. The researcher had her ancestors leaving there and going to California, and some on her family-tree went to Hartford, CT. He or she posted a lot of data that day. (7/17/10)
My husband's grandmother was born Elsie MOURA, reportedly on Sao Miguel. I haven't looked at these notes in a long time, so I'll just summarize what I remember. Her parents were Francisco MOURA and Philamina ROSE, reportedly from Sao Miguel. I've been posting queries for 4-5 years and in the past researchers told me they probably started out on Santa Maria. In ~1905, Elsie, as a 12-yr-old came over to Boston, MA, to be an indentured servant for 7 yrs. When her time was up, she married Antonio "Tony" PACHECO in ~1911 in Cambridge, MA. Tony had been born in ~1885 in the village of Sao Roque which is beside Ponta Delgada. He came to Boston, MA, ~1905 (age 20). His parents were Joao PACHECO and Jacinta COSTA from that village. Several of the surnames mentioned in the posting from July 2010 were names that were present in Cambridge, MA (US) during the 1940's / 1950's. Also, no one knows what happened to Francisco "Frank" MOURA. There is a possibility that he "died at sea" as a whaler, or he migrated to Brooklyn, NY, where other MOURA families lived. When his wife, "Phoebe" MOURA, arrived in Cambridge, MA, ~1910, there is no mention of her husband. I was just wondering if anyone has ever found a connection between the MOURA families on Santa Maria and the few ones on Sao Miguel.
