thank you so much for this link. i have been researching portuguese pioneers in british columbia canada for the past 20 years and this is a great research tool. like 1849 in california, the 1858 gold rush in bc attracted portuguese pioneers, mostly from the azores but some from madeira and cape verde as well. i believe most came by steamer from san francisco, such as gregory fernandez who is listed in the 1857 san fran city directory as a fruit and vegetable dealer. he shows up in the 1863 city directory in the city of new westminster near vancouver, the proprietor of a "cracker and coffeee manufactury". in 1876 he has tried and acquitted of attempt murder. he was from madeira. Perhaps the most famous is portuguese joe silvey who married the grandaughter of the great indian chief capialano. the book of professor jean barman of ubc, "the remarkable adventures of portuguese joe silvey" has become a best seller, now in its 3rd edition. i am proud to have contributed a short preface. A J. S. Silvey appears in the 1850 san fran city directory as a river boat captain on the sacramento and san joaquin river. Joe was from calheta de nesquim in pico. could it be the same person? oral family tradition is that joe had a brother in california and one in new bedford, mass. the 1852/3 directory lists an A. Silvy on montgomery street-could it be joe's brother antonio? more at http://portuguesepioneersofbc.blogspot.com cumprimentos manuel azevedo -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected].
