When you put down ref (Sousa 1903 p. 199) where is that?

Cheri,

There was a major flood in 1896 and another in 1903. Affected areas were
Povoacao, Faial da Terra, and Ribeira Quente.

Trying to narrow down a death date.

In interviews of a 90-something year old cousin (though another cousin), he
remembers his grandfather dying after his marriage in 1945. He can't recall
if it was before or after the birth of a particular child in the 1950s. I
was told this ancestor died in the 1960s (1961) and my cousin, Altino, in
Canada, was told in 1966 or there abouts. So my answer is between 1945 and
1966. Although I sent Joao Ventura to look in the 1960s, he didn't find it.

Altino was told, by this uncle, that there was a flood in Povoacao, the year
our ancestor died. So they had to guess at his age and they made him 101 or
105 (I'm mixing up the stories between my American end and Altino's Canadian
end). The ancestor was born in 1861. So initially, I took it at face value.
But in pressing the grandson who, today, is in his early 90s, he can only
state that it happened after his marriage in 1945 and there was a big flood
in Povoacao. Around June or July. They were harvesting wheat (OK, I'm from
America - I thought wheat came from really flat areas, like Kansas!). I
tried googling for floods in Povoacao, but I only find the mudslide from the
1990s. But this ancestor died the year of the big flood in Povoacao.

Is there any history buff on this list that knows of a flood in Povoacao in
the after 1945 through the 1960s? I'm guessing because my ancestor died in
Vila Franca that they couldn't get word to Povoacao due to the flood to get
his birth to figure out his exact age. And I'm guessing that a guy in his
90s can look like a guy in his 100s back in the 1940s, 50s, or 60s.

Thanks,
Cheri Mello
