Aloha, My ggggrandfather Jose da Silva Sampaio born 26 Sept 1817, Rabo de Peixe, His mother's name was Maria de Jesus (her parents were Maria Estrella and Manuel Furtado). He was baptized on 3 Oct 1817, at the Church Bom Jesus, Rabo de Peixe, S. Miguel. My question is, since he was born out of wedlock, and the church does not list his fathers name - how does he decide to go by Silva Sampaio? Can I assume that is his real blood line name? What was the custom back then?
