Late to respond as well, but my great grandmother was Belmira de Ávila and she was from Pedro Angra in Terceira. She married my great grandfather by proxy in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira in 1916 and then traveled to meet him in the states. They lived in Alameda, CA.
Both her parents came from São Jorge Island (José Sebastião de Ávila from Manadas and Isabel Augusta Dias from Calheta). The Avila name is actually Isabel's mother's name (Ana Rosa de Ávila) and that's as far back as I've researched that side. We have de Melo, but not Mello.
