Hi!
Last year we vacationed in Kauai and took time to go to St. Catherines Church
in Kealia!I took pictures from the church records for births, deaths-etc.Then
we went to the cemetery there and took many pics of names I have heard from the
past!My grandmother was Antonia Freitas whos father was named John de Freitas
Braz!My great grandmother's last name was Cardoza!Of course I am not sure of
any of this as it is all by word of mouth!I find that many times names are
changed to suit the needs of the persons doing the changes! As an example the de
Freitas name was changed to Serpa reasons unknown reasons and de Freitas was
also changed to being spelled Freytas or something similar! We are currently in
our 2nd day of an 8 day trip to Kauai and would love to hear of someone from
the Freitas side while we are here!By the way so many of your family names I
have heard from the past so just maybe were related somehow!Katherine Kam Lin
Kung, my mother, was born in
Kilauea, Kauai! My grandparents were married in Hanalei, Kauai! My great
grandfather was buried in Kahlihiwai, Kauai and washed away by a Tzunami in the
1950s!Thanks for your time!

My husband and I are going on a cruise this spring that includes a one day stop
on Faial. Most of my ancestors are from Feteira on the maternal side and from
Horta and Flamengos on the paternal side. The most recent names on the maternal
side include Silveira, Gonsalves, Correia and Vargas and  Silva and Martin on
the paternal side. My cousin did a lot of research at the Grupo de História das
populações (http://www.ghp.ics.uminho.pt/) site and was able to trace back to
the 17th century on that site, but there is very little information about any
of the people. Those who immigrated all came to Alameda County in California
(Fremont, Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward). We have a lot of information about
them once they arrived in the U.S., but almost nothing else.  Does anyone have
any suggestions for places for us to visit in Faial to get more information
about those who came from Faial or web sites that might have more information?
I do not speak or read
Portuguese so any suggestions would be helpful. We also have no information
about possible descendants who reside in Faial and wondered if anyone has any
suggestions for locating them.  Thanks for any assistance or ideas.  Diane
George
