I totally agree with John Roias - In earlier times, certifications in the 
Azores were issued for a multitude of reasons, both religious and secular. 
However, since civil registry was established in the Azores, such 
certifications are mostly required for religious functions, such as 
receiving sacraments (Communion, Matrimony, or, the last rites).
