Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] FW: Birth Record (Flamengos)

Hi,

I found the attached baptismal record for my paternal grandfather, Jose
Ignacio da Silva in FHC microfilms. Jose was born in Flamengos on November
28, 1883 (later he used the name of Joe Enos Silva) and resided in the
Alvarado area of Alameda County, California). The attached record is the
second page.

He was the son of Joao Ignacio da Silva and Clara Florinda. I believe that
the record states that the parents of Joao are unknown. It does list the
parents of Clara Florinda and the godparents are named as well. I haven't
been able to translate the last couple of sentences, but I think they are
about what happened to the document. Please let me know if I have not
translated correctly.

I have not been able to find any indication of the names of the grandparents
elsewhere. I asked my aunt about the missing parents and she said that the
family story was that Joao was the son of a member of the church choir
(Nossa Senhora da Luz in Flamengos) and a priest, who had also impregnated
other choir members in the community. She thought that the surname of the
mother or the father was Pedras or Pedros (later Peters). The story was that
the Silva name came from the woman who took in the single mother after her
parents threw her out. The story goes on to say that the priest returned and
married her later.

I was hoping that someone in the group might have heard a similar story or
have some ideas about what might have happened.

Diane George
