Hi Cheri,

I'm just browsing the post about Doreen's search, and it is
complicated. So, I'm not sure what exactly she is looking for.
So, I thought I would just add a few pieces of information about the
City of Lowell (MA, USA).

Lowell is called a small city, but it is fairly large considering all
the sections of it. It is also called "the Mill City," as it was
created for all the mills being built and the .housing. for the
millworkers. The large Merrimack River runs right through it, so
there are sections on the north side of it, and sections on the south
side. And the Portuguese neighborhood is in what is referred to as
"South Lowell." The Portuguese church is St. Anthony's Church.
(Same name as the Portuguese Church in Cambridge, MA.)

There are several cemeteries in the city. The large "Lowell
Cemetery" is one, and a few streets away there are a set of smaller
cemeteries all bordering each other. The largest of the set is the
Edson Cemetery. There are no sections devoted to Portuguese
families that I know of, so they could have been buried in either.

I'm told that both the City Clerk's office is somewhat helpful, and
the Reference Dept. at the Pollard Library is helpful. And, there
are researchers on the Mailing Lists at www.rootsweb.com volunteer
to help.

Also, it was mentioned that one person went to a State Hospital, and
that was probably the "Tewksbury State Hospital." Lowell borders
on Tewksbury.

Lowell also borders on Chelmsford (Lowell annexed off of Chelmsford
in 1826.) and there are 2 cemeteries there - not far from Lowell.

The only daily newspaper for the city is "The Lowell Sun." And the
Pollard Library should have back issues of the paper on microfilm.
