Michael, I can't answer your question about any numbers on the "left" simply because I don't see any. [I use a MAC, but not sure if that's why.] I see numbers following some of the names which indicate the lifetime of an individual.
However, it's your comment on "trying to learn the language" that I would like to address. Using NEPS allows you to switch into other languages. For example, I'd rather see the abstract in English, so whenever I go into a village there will appear some rows of flags towards the top of the page. By clicking on the Union Jack (England's flag) then all the Portuguese words are translated into English. But, I could just as easily switch to Swedish by clicking on the flag of Sweden if so desired. The records will stay in my language of choice until I switch to another village. But as soon as the flags show up I just switch back to my preferred language. Sorry, I couldn't shed any light on the numbers issue.
