Linda,

Here's the web address: <http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/>
http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/

Its known as NEPS for short because the official name is
Núcleo de Estudos de População e Sociedade

It has databases for Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge and is adding more as it goes
along. I went to the genealogias submenu for Azores (which gave me a choice of
Pico, Faial or Sao Jorge)and then clicked on the map for Lages do Pico and got
the villages within the council area. Once there, I clicked on the Union Jack
flag to get everything in English. Here's the direct link to Calheta de Nesquim
:
 <http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=Calheta;lang=en>
http://www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/geneweb/gwd.exe?b=Calheta;lang=en

Type in any name you're looking for and see what comes up. Try omitting a name
sometimes is also helpful. Such as only use Manuel Silva when looking for
Manuel Borba Silva (I'm making up a name here) to see who comes up. People
often changed names over the course of their lifetime to distinguish themselves
from someone else in the village or to honor someone who has passed.

If it still doesn't make sense after you've tried it out. I'll write out more
specific instructions later. I'm somewhat limited for time as I'm at work right
now.

Hope this helps.

Gayle

Neil,

I looked at the NEPS website for Calheta and could not find any information
about the parents. The only additional information it showed (which you may
already have) is birthdates for three of the children of Jose Antonio Braga and
Marianna Sao Jose: namely, Jose born 28 Dec 1888, Maria born 26 Dec 1890 but
died 7 days later on 2 Jan 1891, and finally Delmia born 6 Nov 1892.

Sorry, I don't have answers to the questions you actually posted, but figured
I'd send what I saw in case you didn't have the above info.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Searching for Braga birth or death location

I am trying to determine the Acore birth village or the US death location for a
Jose Manuel Braga. In April 1882 he gets married to a Marianno de Sao Jose in
Senhora da Conceicao, Angra, Terceira (her hometown)-see CCA casa record. They
have four children: Jose, Mario, Delfina & Anna-all born in Calheta de Nesquim,
Pico. (see Jose bap record) He ends up in Lowell, Mass......in 1909 with two of
his children, Anna & Jose. He is in the 1914 Lowell, Ma city directory with his
son-Josi. This son Jose moves to Oakland, California. The April 1882 Conceicao,
Terceira marriage states that Jose Antonio Braga is the: illegitimate child of
a Manuel Antonio Braga of Braga, Portugal ................& Anna Margarido of
?......
I am trying to figure out what village he was likely baptized at or how old he
is. I suspect he (his Mother-Anna Margarido?) may both be native to Calheta de
Nesquim-Pico island, where all his 4 children were born in Calheta de Nesquim.
How else do I trace these two parents roots?
Does anyone have these same Braga's in their family?
Is there a death record of him in Lowell, Mass?
Any help and direction is very much appreciated.
Thank You
Neil Teixeira
