PAF (familysearch.org, under $10 with Companion), Legacy and Rootsmagic are all better than Family Tree Maker, and all should do books/ reports of any length.

Maybe people can also suggest good pdf printers for large documents. I have one or two I like but they work best on smaller documents, as far as I know.
