The obituary of Frank Edward Ray 1921-2012 appeared in today's LA Times.
In July of 1976, the school bus he was driving was hijacked. On board were
Ray and 28 children ages 5-14. They were held in a moving van truck body
buried in an old quarry near Livermore Ca. Ray and two of the older boys were
able to dig their way out within a few hours and go for help. The kidnappers
were 3- 20 something sons of prominant SF Bay Pennsula area families. They
were sentenced to life terms and have been denied parole despite several
appeals. In 1993, Ray was portrayed by Karl Malden in a TV movie "They've
Taken Our Children: The Chowchilla Kidnaping."

Ray, whose birth name was "Reis" was born in Merced County. His father
(as I recall) was a half-brother of my Uncle Jose Reis from Lomba Flores
and married to my father's sister Angelina.
