Might the same thing occur with "José" as is sometimes the case with "Maria" -- i.e., that it may be one of his given names, but since it's so common he's called all his life by his other given name? I have a cousin Maria from the Azores for whom this is true: no one in the family calls her "Maria," although she uses it professionally (makes it handy for screening phone calls!). Katharine.
