Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Reading Portuguese Records: Lesson 1: Baptisms, 3rd
Period

I will rerun this series that I did a year and a half ago.  Cheri
===================================
Key Baptism Words:

baptisei solemnemente = baptize solemnly

 um individuo do sexo masculino/feminino =(an individual of the sex
masculine/feminine)

 nome = name

 nasceu = born

 filho legitimo = son legitimate

 filha natural = daughter illegitimate

Pai nao sabido = father unknown

 Pais incognitos = parents unknown

 natural (with a location) = native

 onde  se receberam = where received (married)

 neto paterno = grandson paternal

 neta materna = granddaughter maternal

 Foi paderinho = For godfather

madrinha = godmother

Third Baptism Period 1860-1911 (approx). - this is mainly from Joao
Ventura's lectures in San Jose and Sacramento, CA a few years ago.

Order of the info that appears in a record from this time period:

• Baptism date
 • Village and neighborhood
 • Council and priest
 • Sex of child
 • First name of child, date and time of birth
 • Sometimes number born before with the same name
 • Name: first, middle, mother’s family name, father’s family name
• Legitimate or illegitimate
 • Father’s name
 • Mother’s name
 • Place of birth
 • Where living
 • Place married
 • Maternal/paternal grandparents names
 • Godparents

Here's what's considered a fairly clear record from Nossa Senhora das Neves,
in Relva, council of Ponta Delgada, on Sao Miguel island.  The diocese for
all of the Azores is always Angra.  These words will appear near the top of
the record (so play along and pretend you have an ancestor from there).

Here's the answer key:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http://goo.gl/n7VEZ&usg=AFQjCNEDt4aU8cgnIJ4N4JpChNMXlEl5YQ

For more practice, go to the CCA site:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http://goo.gl/GzaqQ&usg=AFQjCNFJqiLhfEj8OVvNQdxxaKcy5KyaRg

Pick any page, any person. They are all from the church of Santa Catarina in
Calheta,
council of Calheta, island of Sao Jorge, with the diocese still being
Angra.  Pick what you can out of the record.  Reply to THIS
email/post/thread/topic and post the URL (the long one or go to
http://www.google.com/url?sa=D&q=http://goo.gl/&usg=AFQjCNH_Pkr5_2Cu5ubdrELuhZ5_2G65mA
 and shorten it like I do) along with with record, say # 13,
Maria, lower right side and what you can get out of it.  People here will
tell you what you are right and what you are close on.
I'll post a different lesson in a couple of days.
