Assuming that my hypothesis about the surnames of the marriage record, I went looking for other PINE men and their origin. There was one who could have been a close relative living in Middletown RI ... his origin was Cedros, Faial just like you had some indication that your great grandfather had as well. Since this man was also originally a PINHEIRO, I decided to search the Cedros records. What I was initially going to look for was a birth record for your great grandfather ... but 1894 is just a few years too late to be sure that I would find it. So, I decided to look for marriage records for a Jose Pinheiro who married a Louisa Silveira in Cedros some time prior to 1894 ... found a parent pair with the right names. Jose da Rosa Pinheiro born 26 DEC 1855 married Luisa Emilia da Silveira on 16 Feb 1882 (this might be a typo <perhaps 1892> as their first child born 1893) in Cedros. They had the following children: Jose born 1893 ... this is probably your ggf. Ana born 1896 Francisca 1897 Antonio 1900 the bad news is that Jose da Rosa Pinheiro was born to an unwed mother. Her name was Rosa Francisca Vicencia born Cedros 18 May 1831 to parents: Jose da Rosa de Faria and Vicencia da Rosa Silveira. So, at least you'll be able to trace back from here on his mother's ancestry ... this is exactly what I ran into with my gf. The problem with this data set is that this Jose Pinheiro was born 2 November 1893 ... NOT the same birthdate as found in the WW1 draft record. I do not know how to resolve that problem. I still would look further for church records and try to locate EVERY record that you can find here in USA that pertains to any member of this family. If the above turns out to be the right family the records take you back very quickly to 1600. Al In a message dated 9/6/2012 1:20:01 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes:
It could have been because my great great grandfather became a citizen and it was probably naturally change the last name to Perry I'll have to check maybe it was Saint Marys that they're priest was associated with um but I know for sure wasn't Saint John the Baptist because I already checked there On Sep 6, 2012 1:17 PM, <[email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) > wrote: Mike, If you try to find the church marriage record, look in New Bedford. That is where they were married even though the event was "recorded" in Dartmouth. Also, the priest was of New Bedford. I, too, would have thought his name would have been Pinheiro and was surprised when I saw the marriage record for Joseph Pine & Mary Perry recorded Dartmouth 19 May 1917 as having taken place in New Bedford. His parents are listed as "Joseph & Louise Silveira" while her parents are listed as "Antonio & Mary Leal" ........ why is she being married as Mary Perry then? This is first marriage for both. She is age 18 and born Fairhaven, MA ... so about 1898-1899? Al In a message dated 9/6/2012 1:05:41 P.M. You are sure he was born on the "other side" , I am going to guess though the name is probably Jose Pinheiro or Jose Pineiro or something like that since Jose Pinheiro would literally translate to Joseph Pine. Also, have you had any luck with looking at the 1920 census? He died between 1918 and Oct 1924, these dates coincide with my grandpa's birthday and my grt grandmas 2nd marriage, his WWI record confirms his throat affliction. He married my great grandma Maria Pereira on May 19, 1917 in Dartmouth, Mass This is all I could find and verify that's it him, because he died so young, my mother and grandmother don't know anything about him, I don't know where to go next or if I even have enough to find anything.
