Lee,
I have all these folks in my family tree because I am related to Francisco
Medeiros Grota and Madalena Arruda Couto (his brother Antonio is my
GGGGrandfather). In my records I have Francisco's birth at about 1810
in Ajuda Bretanha and his death on 30 April 1871 Santa Barbara, Santo Antonio,
Sao Miguel. Maybe that info can help you in your search.

Whatever you find will also help me fill in some gaps in my family tree,
especially on the Sousa side because my maternal grandfather was also from
Bretanha and I have very little information other than his father was a
foundling and took his wife's name of Sousa as his own. I must say these name
changes can make my head spin at times!

Good luck!
Joanne
