Hello,

I finally had a chance to spend some time going through some of the web
site for "Passports" yesterday. For people leaving from Ponta Delgada in
1911 or 1912, there were over 140 pages of handwritten names, etc. I
was looking for Mrs. Philomena MOURA traveling with her 2, young daughters,
and I did not find them. Out of all those pages, I only saw the MOURA
name on about 3 or 4 of the pages. ... One of my problems is that the
1920 US census says that they migrated in 1912. But, when we visited
sith some family members last spring, they said one "family story" was
that "Phoebe" had arrived while her older daughter, Elsie, was still a
young teen. And, she went to the home on Beacon Hill in Boston to check
on her daughter, and didn't like what was going on, so she took her out of
there. I was also reminded that one daughter of Elsie thought her
mother's real name was Elsita. This "story" conflicts with the supposed
year of arrival, as Elsie was marrying Antonio PACHECO in August 1912.

Elsie MOURA was reportedly born in Sao Miguel in 1893 and migrated to
MA/US ~1905 as a 12-yr-old. So, if her mother was coming over when
Elsie was still a young teen, that would have made her immigration ~1908 /
1909. I am half-way through the Passport pages out of Ponta Delgada
for 1907 / 1908, and there are only ~70 pages. And, I noticed there are
no pages between 1909 and 1910.

IF Mrs. "Phoebe" (ROSE) MOURA was talking to census-takers in 1920, maybe
10 yrs. after arriving, would she have remembered which year she arrived
in MA? Or, would she have just given a year - and did she understand
English?

As I've mentioned before, Philomena "Phoebe" was reportedly born ~1874 in
"Portugal" - don't know if it was the Azores. But, that census record
said her ROSE parents were both born on Madeira. I haven't done too
much on learning more about that family. I'm guessing she married
Francisco MOURA ~1890 on Sao Miguel, as reportedly the 5 children that I
know of were born there between 1891 and 1905: Emanuel, Francisco,
Elsita, Rosa, Carolina.

One good thing is that, because of my persistence, and much more
information available on-line this year, I have just connected with a
descendant of Frank & Annie (?) MOURA who arrived in Oakland, CA, in
1920's. They had 7 children, and it is their youngest whose family I
have connected with. And, because of a newspaper article from 1961, I
found out that Frank & Annie had gone back to the Azores ~1952 and
remained there. In 1961 they were traveling back to visit their children
for their 50th wedding anniversary. They went back, and I can guess
they might have passed in the Azores during 1960's or 1970's. ... I am
still hoping to find out more about the family of "Manny" and "Cora" MOURA
in Brooklyn, NY. So far they are harder to find.

I'm also thinking that the 2 brothers, one in CA, one in NYC, remained
close, and also seem to have remained in contact with their 3 sisters in
Cambridge, MA. There might have been visits between MA and NY during
both 1950's/1960's. The sisters became Mrs. Elsie PACHECO, Mrs. Rosie
PERRY, and Mrs. Carrie MEDEIROS, and they were around till 1980.

There are 2 mysteries for this extended family. No one knows what
happened to the father, Francisco "Frank" MOURA, possibly born ~1870 in
"Portugal." He was a whaler, and possibly he died at sea ~1900. Or,
one guess is that, when his wife and children were migrating to MA between
1905 and 1912, he migrated - somewhere else.

P.S. On the Passport pages for 1911, 1912, leaving Ponta Delgada, I saw
the PACHECO name many times. "Tony" PACHECO reportedly came to MA ~1904
or 1905 as a 20-yr-old. I'll check for his name - as I have time.
And, I can check for Elsie's name during those yrs. at the same time.
