Lee, I have Bernardo's from my maternal side from São Sebastião, Ginetes. In my Bernardo side, that surname is derived from Bernardo Francisco Cabral who married Francisca Maria de Jesus 05 Aug 1805
Bernardo's parents were Thome Cabral and Maria Antonia. Francisca's parents were José Raposo and Joanna Francisca. Perhaps your Betnardo's are from this same line.
