I have a SOUZA from Sao Jorge who came to US before 1860.

Daniel Machado Souza, who always used the name "Charlie Coleman" for
reasons that I have never discovered, was a "mariner" or sailor that census
tell
me was in US by 1860. I first located him and his child bride (age 14 with
their first son born RI) in an 1875 census of Providence, RI. His young
bride was from Flores.

I only learned his real name from RC church cemetery records (a family
request for movement of his grave).

He was born about 1835.
