No, if you find a baptism that says the baby was born to Manuel Martins and
Maria da Gloria, you go and find Manuel & Maria's marriage.  It will say
Manuel was the son of A & B and that Maria da Gloria was the daughter of X
& Y.

It's a kind of weird thing that us Portuguese genealogists have to get used
to - the time period of women with no last name.
