Hi All,
I have previously shared with some of the group off list but in thinking about it and based on their comments I felt there is a lesson here that may be of help to others. I was recently contacted by my cousin about the grave site for Manual J. Carvalho Jr. in Fall River. I have been there (St Patrick Cemetery) Last summer and took a picture of the site. I was thinking there was a stone there but to my disappointment there was only a number marker in Section 12 Grave 978. I receive some information from the cemetery office about the site and besides my great uncle my great grandmother Maria Filomena Rocha was buried there and two infants. Maria A Ferios and Rosa Pavao. My cousin wants to have a stone placed at the site and wanted to verify that it was the right grave and wanted to know more information of who the two infants were. After some searching I ordered the birth and death records for the two infants from the MA state archives and to my surprise they arrived within two weeks. I was only able to find the births of the two infants and the death record for Rosa Pavao on the MA archive web site. I was fairly sure that Maria A Ferios (Faria) was the daughter of Antonio A Ferios (Faria) and Eliza Carvalho as Antonio had purchased the grave and the birth record showed that Maria A. Ferios was the daughter of Antonio and Eliza. Rosa Pavao proved to be a bit more difficult. Her parents were given as Manuel Pavao and Francisca Rosa I tried to find them on the Ellis Island website and had no luck. I then searched for just Francisca Pavao and found Francisca R. Pavao arriving on the Cretic 27 Mar 1907 When I looked at the record I found Francisca and three children Manuel, age 5, Mary, age 3, and Rosa, age 1. I also saw that they had been in the US till 1906 and were returning to Fall River and her husband. This was helpful but I was trying to find a connection to explain why Rosa was buried in this particular grave. I went to the CCA site and looked at the passport records and searched. I found Francisca Rosa and the three children Manuel, age 5, Maria, age 3, and Rosa age 1 mo., What I was interested in was what Freguesia they were from and the record showed they were all from Bretanha. Then I noticed that also traveling with them was Francisco Alves Gallago age 56 and Rosa Espirito Santo age 63 the parents of Francisca Rosa. I then looked back at the passenger list I saw Antonio Alves Faria age 56 and Francisca E. S. Faria age 63 there and looking closer they were going to their visit their son Antonio Alves Faria Jr in Fall River. The name Gallago was changed to Faria by the time they arrived in NY. This showed the connection to Antonio A. Ferios (Faria). Francisca Rosa was the sister of Antonio. So that explains why Rosa was buried in the grave site. Other things I found out while searching with a hint from Ancestry I found Manuel Pavao and Frances Pavao on the 1910 Census ED 121 Sheet 3B lines 69-74. This record shows they have 4 children living of the 6 that had been born, Manuel age 9, Mary age 7, Antonio age 1 year 7 mo., and John age 2 mos. The census also states all the living children were born in the US. Manuel and Francisca Rosa came to this country in 1894. According to George Pacheco they were married in Fall River. One other Item there seems to be a question as to where Rosa was born. One record says the Acores and the other Fall River. I think this could be because of language difficulties and confusion as to reporting the birth. I began to believe Rosa was born in the Acores because of the Passport and Passenger record information. The birth was then reported upon returning to the US and the clerk in Fall River assumed she was born there. A check of the baptisms of Nossa Senhora da Ajuda in Bretanha (baptism #4 year 1907) revealed that Rosa was born on the 18 January and baptized there on the 27 Jan 1907. Sometimes little things are worth investigating and now I know the whole story of who is buried at the grave site and the relationship of them. I also been reminded that there are mistakes in the records and just don't quit investigating because something does not add up. I want to add that except for sending a request for the records from the MA Archives ($3 each what a deal) I found all of this new information on line. This closed the book on my trip to the cemetery last summer.
