Thanks again Doug! Good info & details for everyone on the list. I have used
some of these techniques.

Yes, my Machado Avila great uncles from Ribeiras, Pico, mentioned the Spain
connection. One second cousin mentioned a connection to Pedro Menendez de
Aviles & papers that documented this.....however they are missing now. Think I
told you that some years back. Have read quite a bit about him & his life. He
did voyage to the Azores once but I could only find it briefly mentioned.

My Cedros, Faial research, where my grandfather, Tomas Pereira Jorge de Escobar
was born was challenging but through the help of many others on the list & my
trip to the Azores in the early 2000's, I have hundreds of records. While
searching the archives in Faial, I found many records for other Portuguese
families that I had grown up with in RI.....not knowing at the time that we
were related. I lived on a small island only 9 miles long & 1 mile wide off of
Newport, RI. Later learned through my research that 5 of these families had
immigrated from Cedros, Faial and some were 3rd---5th cousins of mine. How cool
is that! Many were in my class at school but no one talked about being related,
etc. A pleasant surprise.
