My grandmother traveled alone to New York and then by train to Hanford, CA. She was going to her cousin (Joaquin Valine) who owned the California Saloon. She was sponsored by him or maybe one of her two brothers who were already here. Upon arrival in Hanford she went right to the saloon which was very near the train station. She walked right in the front door. Her cousin was very happy to see her, but he told her "Virginia, you never come in the front door of a saloon. Ladies don't do that!" She didn't know. Her cousin had told her he knew a nice man for her to marry and had told my grandfather that he had a nice girl coming that he might like to marry. And they did marry the next year.
