Danvers State Hospital sits on a hill just west of Route 1 in Danvers and has been a landmark for years. Several years ago it was purchased by a developer and a large condominium complex was built around it. At the time I worked for Quikrete and delivered construction mortar to the site. The main building of the hospital was completely gutted leaving just the original brick shell and reconstructed. During the course of the construction one of new buildings caught fire and a new section of Condos burnt to the ground fortunately the original building was undamaged. I remember seeing the building back in the late 50's and always told it was a state hospital. To see it up close in 2008 when I worked with Quikrete I was impressed with architecture and style of the building. I am glad they left the original facade.

The poor house system was used by the poor for housing and sometimes treatment for physical illnesses. At least the research I've done in the midwest shows this. May be different in New England.
