A URL: Uniform Resource Locator. The http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/ thing.
However, if looking at a certain page, extra things will be added on. Original home page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/ The How To page: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~azrwgw/HowTo.html And if you are on a really large site (such as Ancestry or Ellis Island directing someone to a particular page) or shopping, some of those URLs can get to be 3 or more lines of text! And when hitting reply, many email servers copy the previous message (in which that person had the previous message and that person had the previous message) and soon we have the same text 5 times which gets to be too large and the spam filter starts doing its thing (Also, the same text 5 times drives the Digest and Abridged people crazy as they have to read it 5 times AND people who are on dial up modems have a hard time loading the email...long messages that get copied over and over can be 10 pages in a Word doc!) And when the URLs get copied over and over, the spam filter will again start to do its thing. There are services out there (free) that can shorten the URLs. Just type "shorten url" without the quotes into a search engine and you'll probably recognize some that have been sent to you. Tiny URL, Bitly, Google Shortener, Owly, TinyCC, etc. You copy your long URL and paste it into your favorite URL shortener. It gives you the code which you then copy and paste into your email. And why do I use a URL shortener on some things like the Azores GenWeb that is only half a line of text? 1) Because people allow their email to copy the previous message (they don't "snip" it out) so the URL gets copied over and over and then someone has been thrown into the spam filter because they have so many links in their email. 2) When I became aware that some of these URL shorteners keep statistics, it helps me gauge what's useful on this list. Hope this is useful!
