Hi Mike,

I don't know this João J. Pacheco, either.
Since the first person in the grave is my ancestor - the same one who married my ancestor from Chile - I think those who followed in being buried there are more likely friends or in-laws of your ancestor's generation.

Pacheco is found in Pico, and in Piedade, where our ancestors were born. There was a Pacheco Moniz family who moved to Piedade from Furnas, São Miguel, marrying in Piedade in 1870. One of their children moved on to Sacramento and descendants here. They now go by just Moniz. Maybe João J. Pacheco is somehow related to them.

Out of curiosity, I found 99 named Maria Pacheco in my genealogy program. I found 110 named João Pacheco.
So far, I have 957 named Pacheco from everywhere:
677 from Terceira
55 from São Jorge
31 from Graciosa
30 from Pico
7 from Faial
2 from Flores
0 from Corvo
3 from Santa Maria
82 from São Miguel

These last two are deceptive, because I do relatively little research there and so the fact I have 82 on São Miguel just shows that is where the vast majority of people named Pacheco are from in the Azores.

Those from Terceira are often from noble families which descend from the Pacheco de Lima family and have been in Terceira for 500 years.

I have one of these Pachecos from Terceira. His name was Francisco Fernandes Pacheco, born about 1600, maybe in Santa Bárbara, Terceira. And there is a chance I have another. His grandmother might have been a Pacheco, born about 1533. Who knows? Maybe she was from São Miguel, or maybe linked to this Pacheco de Lima family.

In any case, it will be interesting for us to figure out who these Pachecos buried with our ancestors are.

I have in the same 6 grave plot as my GGgrandparents in the St.John the Baptist cemetery in mass. A Joao J. Pacheco, he is listed as being 92 yrs old. He died in Nov 1918 and was buried on November 30, 1918. Now the interesting thing is. He's buried on top of Manuel J. Leal who is a close relative of Doug Da Rocha Holmes and his father. I'm connected to Dougs father as 4th cousins and also to Doug as well.
Do any of you know who this Mr. Pacheco is?

Eliseu,

I have over 1100 people in my Flores and Pico databases, but not one Maria Pacheco. There are some surnames specific  to certain islands or island groups.

I do have about 150 each Maria and Manuel Rodrigues.
