My grandfather came to the United States in the early 1880's. His name was Francisco Jose Luiz(s) from Pedro Miguel, Faial. It is spelled Luiz on this gravestone here in Sacramento, Ca. So the topic of the other thread doesn't become taken over and become completely off topic, I started a new thread by beginning a new email. In my database, I have 19 people of Portuguese descent with the first name of Luis or Luiz. I have 27 people of Portuguese descent with the last name of Luis or Luiz. Since I have no one with that name migrating to America, I don't see any Anglicization of the name. I need to figure out how many people I have in my database of Portuguese descent. I merged it together many years ago with my mom's Ozark lines. Should have never done that. If I had it separate, I would know what percentage of people that I have with the name of Luis/Luiz and that would let me know how common it is. It seems it my family to be of medium frequency (based on my research).
