David,
The best way to test that unsatisfactory theory that the priest wrote down the wrong first name is to find the baptisms and/or marriage of other children and see what the name is. I realize this is a remote ancestor and the records might not make it possible, but that's the only way I can think to solve it.
If the experts got it wrong and you're right about your hesitation to crown yourself king, what might have happened is a close relationship could exist between this one in your record and the one they all say he should be. Maybe an uncle. Maybe the wife is the same, but maybe she married twice. First to an uncle or your ancestor and then next to your ancestor. Or maybe there are two brothers who married her.
This could also be tested if you scour the records for all witnesses at every marriage and search all baptisms for a time period you think would be enough. Chances one or both of these people held enough of a high status in that village that people would be honored to have them as padrinhos.
Boa sorte,

Thank you Margaret and Dano. Unfortunately, what you've read is what I read which leads me to the very question Dano brought up. Namely, everyone has Belchoir's father as Gaspar yet this record has Joam. Over the years I've been told various reasons for this including the one mentioned, "the priest wrote it down wrong" which I also find unsatisfactory. With that interpretation I could make myself the Queen of England. Another suggestion was that Clara was married to Joam and in other years, she was married to his half brother Gaspar, again with no evidence. It's a puzzle. Thanks again, David

My earliest record is a marriage of Belchoir Baldaya to Maria Franca from 1623 in the Lagoa (Rosario) section of the online "Direcao Regional da Cultura" site we're all familiar with. My only remaining option is maybe I'm reading the record incorrectly. Would someone be so kind as to take a look at the record and tell me what they see? I can read the other names but I'm unsure of the relationships - parents, godparents? The record is under Casamentos, 1594 - 1683, it's record number 0052, and it's on the lower half of the the page. Many thanks in advance,David Perry
