Mary B,

Yes, I tested with 23 and Me, as I wanted the health results. I did not
test either of my parents. I kinda know what they've got at their age :)

There are a lot of health things that they test for. I did not get any
scary results either, but things to be aware of. Knowing that Type 2
diabetes runs straight down my Portuguese line, I kinda expected a positive
for that one. I didn't get it! However, reading through the studies that
are linked to the results, lets one know that it's something like 30%
hereditary and 70% environmental, so I could eat my way into diabetes if I
wanted to.

The drug response was interesting too. I've got that warafin/coumadin (sp)
sensitivity, so if I'm ever prescribed that, I'll need a smaller dose. I'm
a carrier for hemachromastosis (spelling), but that's not a problem unless
I ever had kids and the guy was a carrier too. Some kind of gross things
too...yes, I knew my earwax was wet. And being positive for Post Operative
Nausea and Vomiting...yep, I knew that anesthesia makes me sick. Didn't
know that there was a genetic component for it. My mom has it too.

I've got a different ethnic breakdown on 23 and Me than on FTDNA. You
really gotta dig on that one to see what populations you are compared
against. This part is still evolving, so until they get it further
refined, you'll see different results with the different companies. Once
they all start using the same populations for comparison, then we'll start
to see the same results.

You'll find less people answering you about ancestry on 23 and Me. Most go
for the health results and don't know how to turn off the ancestry
business. And since they don't do genealogy, they have no idea what to do
with us crazed genealogists!
