Hi Pam, Deni and I were in Oakland about 2 years ago and they had one reader that could read the small reels. They kept a 64 magnification lens at the desk that you could sign out. There was a very helpful man, Ralph Severson. He volunteered there once a week.
If you find information you want, you can save it to a flash drive. It is time consuming but as long as no one wants the machine, they let you use it. You might like to take a trip to the Freitas Library ( http://portfsa.org/library/) in San Leandro since you are down here. They have a pretty good collection of books on Portuguese subjects and are also very helpful. It would be good to call ahead and make an appointment as the staff is very small.
