Hi Cheri! Thank you for this discussion, it is helpful. One question: On my
results (I did family finder) I have several people with the same surname
bolded (Dickenson). That is not one of my surnames, is it highlighted because
of similarity to a surname I have or because quite a few people on my matches
have it?

Thanks!

Elisabeth

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Fwd: What Family Tree DNA's Family Finder results
look like

Here's my post from last year about Family Finder.

=====================================

Here's some screen shots from their Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):
http://goo.gl/Rhrvw

There's the Home page, the Matches page, and the Population Finder page.

The FAMILY FINDER HOME PAGE that you see in the link above is just a home page.

The MATCHES page:
You'll see that the first match on this page is Mark Doe. IF this were a real
person on your page, you could click on his name to get a little bit more info
that he filled out on his profile. Email, location, research interests,
haplogroups (if tested Y or mtDNA), etc. Under his name you see an envelope
which is another way to email Mark Doe. The orange icon says TiP. That's an
acronym for Time Prediction. It's the Time Predictor Calculator (a real
statistical thing) for those who have taken the Y-DNA test and want gory detail
on the Time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor (TMRCA) is. Or sometimes you
see MRCA for Most Recent Common Ancestor. The 3rd button is green with a
check. It was a notepad with a pencil but this one has a note on it. If you
matched Mark Doe, you may have put a note that says "Common ancestors are
Manuel Silva and Maria Furtada," or whatever note you want to make about the
person. The blue button under Mark's name lets you know his Gedcom has been
uploaded. THIS IS CRUCIAL FOR FAMILY FINDER PARTICIPANTS! Click on the button
and start exploring Mark's family tree. After the buttons, you see Y-DNA 111
FMS. Mark has also tested his Y-DNA up to the 111 marker level. He also took
the Full MitochondrialDNA Sequence (FMS) test.

The next section has headings.
Match date: The date that your match appeared.
Relationship range: A suggested range that the geneticists thinks your DNA
falls into.
Suggested relationship: What they really think the relationship is.

Shared cM: Total shared centoMorgans. A centoMorgan is a unit of measure,
like an inch or a centimeter, but something microscopic. The total helps the
geneticists with the relationship range and the suggested relationship.

Longest block: The longest block you and Mark Doe have in common. This too
helps the geneticists with the range and suggested relationshp. The screen
default is sorted by this field. You can click on the top of any heading to
sort by that heading. If it's backwards, click it again and it will reverse
sorting directions.

Known Relationship: Once you figure out this is your 1st cousin, aunt,
wwhatever, click the button and chose the relationship. The other person has
to accept the relationship too.

Known Genealogy: Ancestral Surnames:
Here's the CRUCIAL PART. You can upload your Gedcom and FTDNA will compare
your surnames to your matches and the bolded ones on top will be your common
names (not shown here). Or you can go crazy typing them all in by hand. A lot
of people do neither. As soon as someone orders a DNA kit through the Azores
project, the welcome letter goes out that suggests you get your Gedcom in
order. The Gedcom can be uploaded before your results come in. I recommend
this. That way, when your results do come in, your common surnames will be
bolded and on top (unlike the screen shot shown in the URL above).

Now, if your match is Judy Thompson, and Judy has NOT uploaded her Gedcom, you
may just skip over her looking for some other Portuguese name. Thompson isn't
Portuguese, but her maiden name is. You would not know that by looking at the
name Judy Thompson. Unless you remember her posting here. It's pretty time
consuming (and I'm pretty behind), but I try to email people and tell them who
their Portuguese matches are. You can tell instantly if you upload your
Gedcom. And Judy has uploaded her Gedcom (although there seems to be a glitch
on the FTDNA side - I reported it) so when her results come in, you'll see
which surnames you match her on (sorry for using you as an example, Judy)!

FAMILY FINDER - POPULATION FINDER page:
This is the 3rd screen shot in the URL provided above. It shows you your
ethnic percentages and a map where the poppulation geneticists think you came
from. This is in beta. Only 4 western European populations have been tested:
French, Basque, Spain, and Sicily (I think). At the genealogy Jamboree a
couple of weeks ago, Bennett Greenspan, founder and CEO of FTDNA said the
Population Finder is undergoing revision. I think I'll learn more at the DNA
conference in November.

FAMILY FINDER - CHROMOSOME BROWSER (not shown, but attached as a file).
I've attached my dad's Chromosome Browser. I chose to display his match to
Shirley Allegre (in orange) and Altino Demelo (in blue). You can see where my
dad and 4th cousin Shirley match (in orange) and where dad and 2nd cousin
Altino match (in blue). So if you want to know EXACTLY where you match some
one, you can see where. I also changed the setting to display 1+cMs. If I
point at one of the segments, it would say my dad matches Altino from position
XXXXXXX to position YYYYYYY for a total of ZZ cMs.

Attached are a couple of screen shots
from REAL pages (my dad's). I blocked out the names
because I didn't get their permission to post. Except Altino and
Shirley, both of this list. I'm sure they don't mind. Since my dad is half
Portuguese, it's pretty easy to tell his Portuguese half from his American
half. It's also much easier to tell when people have their Gedcoms up.
