Ralph- Thank you for the heads-up on your DNA match experience. I had my father's (german) DNA tested at ancestryDNA and got the same results with contacting others as you. Nothing. I just thought it was the German anal way of thinking. I figure the Azorean line would be more in touch.
I have an Azorean 2nd cousin...(for sure as both our grandfathers worked at the same factory in New Bedford for most of their lives)....did his DNA at 23andme and he was contacted by a Silva descendant with ancestry from Flores. The Silva guy I do not know but was told by my 2nd cousin that he spends half a year in Flores re-habbing the Silva family home. Since there is a bunch of Pimentels on Sao Miguel and Flores and Silva's on both islands, even though they are common names, perhaps there is an old connection. This Silva guy, he was able to connect our Pimentel family to his Silvas on Flores about 4-6 generations back but stops short of your date of 1780. So maybe we are all connected!!
