My earliest Azorean immigrant of Caton/Caetano name was Capt. Manuel (Emanuel) R. Caton to Provincetown, MA., B: 28 May 1862, Santa Maria Isl., Died/Lost at Sea with his whole crew @ Dec/Jan 1918 off Florida coast. He married Ida Silva/Silver, a daughter of Captain Joseph Silva and Rosa Bernardo Silva. He was known as the "Strong man of Provincetown" for supposedly dragging a 400+ pound piece of iron from a P-town shore to his home. They had 8 children born and at least 4 died before age 5. Those who made it to adulthood were: William, Frank Fish, Emma F. and maybe Rosa (unproven). There were at least 2 other Caton men who made their homes in P-town around the same time. John, the gardener, is said to have worked for the artist Charles Webster Hawthorne's property, and the records the artist kept still exist. His granddaughter have them - mentioning John Caton as sitting for her grandfather as a general model, probably mostly when weather would not allow John to do his garden chores. The other man was also named Manuel, and I think this is the one who is your direct. I am very interested in learning more about these three Caton men of P-town, as I suspect they were related somehow. An interesting sidenote: Your "Alverez" sounds a bit like my 3x's great grandmother's name of "Alves," but I suppose they are entirely different names - like Johnson and Johnston? Some Caton's are still in the Cape Cod area, and my research with them is going slowly. I live in Arizona.
