Repost for Patricia P, patricia.phillips1 at earthlink.net
I am relatively new to discussion groups through Google. My Great-Grandfather was Joseph Machado Avila, and I have his birth location as Sao Jorge, Azores. I understand he went by the Machado last name when he decided to locate permanently to the United States. My Mother’s cousin advised me he changed his name to Avila after establishing himself in business with a gentleman who must have carried the Machado last name. Initially, the family went by the spelling “Avilla”. His mother’s name as I understand it was Francisca de Avila. My Great Grandfather’s death certificate lists the name of his father as Joseph M. Avila, and his mother’s maiden name is noted as Anna Francis. For a long time, I understood his name to be Joseph Machado. My Great Aunt Ann Avila completed the death certificate record. He was born December 25, 1850. He died March 9, 1924 in Newman, California. He had thirteen children: Nine boys and four girls. One boy passed away in infancy, William. The last son was named William Joseph, but the other seven boys carried the middle name Machado; Daniel, Anthony, Joseph, Manuel, Frank, John, and George.
