I live in southern California, not too far from the beach. OP is a clothing brand, which is the symbol for "Ocean Pacific." So that is what OP is to me.
Going to genealogy conferences, giving lectures, etc, I run into many genealogists. It used to be considered a hobby for more of our senior citizens. It's not anymore. However, I would say that it's still about 60-70% seniors (over 65 years of age). Many people in that age range did not grow up using these abbreviations and many aren't interested in learning. So if you use them, you run the risk of losing about 60-70% of your reading audience - they aren't going to bother to read or respond to you. Last spring, I made a post about some generally accepted acronyms in the genealogy community, as well as a few that are unique to us Azorean researchers. http://goo.gl/eRfyzy Kip Sperry has written a book titled "Abbreviations & Acronyms: A Guide for Family Historians." Your public library may have a copy. It is also sold at many genealogy shows. His website is: www.kipsperry.com If one does an Internet search of "genealogy acronymns" without quotes, a list of sites come up. Here's one: http://goo.gl/zR723q And it says OP means Order of Preachers! So lets just stick to the basic ones, leave out the texting/twittering shorthand, and everyone will be less confused :) Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
