I have not run across any of these Terceira ancestors of yours.

I have paid close attention to the Ferraz name and have noticed it is mostly found in the north side of Terceira, in the concelho da Praia da Vitória. Of course, it is also found here and there in the other freguesias of the Angra concelho, but they usually come from the north side.

So far, it seems there is no hint as to the origin of your Ferraz from either parent (Nunes or Gonçalves) and since these are pretty remote ancestors, just on the edge of the records running out, you might never learn that.

But I am happy to give you some clues. There is one family in Angra with Gonçalves that also used Chaves and had a son using the Ferraz name. But that family seems to be Rocha Ferraz earlier on, so Gonçalves is just a coincidence. That might mean there is a link to Rocha with your Ferraz ancestor.

Another family using Ferraz has a mother named Gonçalves.

Yet another Ferraz name combination that is found is Nunes Ferraz. And so maybe in your case, Nunes is the source of your Ferraz. By the way, I also find a Nunes Ferraz in Madeira, but it could be simply a coincidence. You could check the ARM database and see if that has an leads for you.

I have many named Ferraz in the 1500s, but the two oldest by that surname in my database at this moment came from Praia da Vitória and Lajes, Terceira and born about 1525 each.

I have an ancestor, Manuel Ferrraz, from Angra, Terceira, in the mid 1600s.

He was son of Manuel Ferraz, b. 23 nov 1604, Sé, Angra, Terceira, and Bárbara Fialho, b. Sé?, Angra?, married on 5 oct 1625, Sé, Angra.

Paternal grandson of Gaspar Gonçalves and Isabel Nunes.

Maternal grandson of João Luiz and Beatriz Tomé

Manuel Ferraz married in Capelas, ilha de São Miguel, to Maria da Costa de Arruda on 5 jan 1667. This is a very interesting line; among the Maria’s ancestors five of them are on the book by RR:

Nuno Gonçalves Homem (chapter 326)

Pedro Vaz Marinheiro (chap. 76)

Bartolomeu Rodrigues de Santa Clara (chap. 152)

Simão de Viveiros (chap. 149)

Gonçalo Vaz Botelho, o Grande (chap. 1)
