I had an ancestor whose wife died right after childbirth, leaving him with the baby and a few other children. How was he to work and take care of kids? So he married his mother-in-law, who was a widow! Joao Ventura, the archivist, explained to me that it was not enough that she was the children's grandmother. If a woman was in your house, you better be married to her! (They had no children, if anyone was wondering). I'm thinking this was early 1700s.
