Hi Herb, I'm not too sure I understand your question.
You asked how to transfer the files and leave the actual PAF program alone, but you said that PAF is no longer on your computer. That's like having an apple tree in your backyard. You go out back to pick the apples and put your apples in the refrigerator. The apple tree is still in the backyard. It didn't go anywhere. You simply transferred the apples from the tree to the fridge. Same thing with transferring the files from PAF to Legacy or FTM. I'd run a search for the actual PAF program (executable file...I don't know the name, but it will end in .exe). Or check under Control Panel to make sure it's still installed. If it is, the shortcut icon somehow disappeared. Do you know how to reinstate the short cut? I'm not a Carbonite user, but I would think that you can store a .ged file. It's just a text file. But if you are storing the actual family file from PAF (it's probably something like MyFamily.PAF vs. MyFamily.ged), then maybe that is why it can't store it. I prefer my backups on an external, flash, AND off site (in the cloud). As you mentioned, there's Carbonite, and there's also Mozy, Dropbox, etc, etc. None of these offsite storage will open your backups. They are just a storage facility. You have to do a File>Import on either Legacy or FTM to restore your backup. And if you don't like Legacy, look at RootsMagic. Their Essentials version is free: http://www.rootsmagic.com/essentials/ No matter which program you pick, you are going to go over a learning curve, especially if you've used PAF for years and years. Anything will take a bit of time to get used to.
