Hi Amy, I am assuming that you have search all the records available in New Zealand and have not been able to locate the town or village where your ancestors came from. The greatest problem I see is trying to locate where in Portugal (including the Acores and Maderia) your GG grandfather could have come from. I would recommend taking the Family Finder DNA test from Family Tree DNA and when you get matches see which region they come from. This will give you an area where to concentrate you search and efforts and perhaps connect you to a distant relation that would be of assistance. The Family Finder test will help identify relations which go back around 200 years from the date of birth of the person tested. It is recommended to test the oldest relative you have to get back the farthest in time. An example would be my family finder would go back to about 1746 where my fathers would go back to 1720. This means that by testing my father I was able to reach back to one more generation in the results. If you have any further questions please let us know.
