Usually the original name is Simoes (Simões).
It might be others, like maybe Simas, but Simões has the closest phonetic sound to Simmons.
But I see your "From" says that already "New Bedford Simmons or Faial / Pico Simoes".
If your Simões is from Pico, I would be interested in the details. I don't have Simões from Pico, but have many from Terceira.
Thinking of the Pico families named Simões, sometimes they are aka Simão.
Simão is a given name and Simões means "son of Simão." That is why you might have someone named Simão de Medeiros and his son using the name José de Medeiros Simões.
