Mike S, Let me be perfectly honest with you. It's not going to happen by Christmas. You probably would have had to start in January to make it happen.
Even on "Who Do You Think You Are?" it takes up to 2 years for some of the celebrities to get the research in to create the episode. You most likely aren't going to find one genealogist to do it all. You would need to find a genealogist that would know about New England records and those of immigrants. You need to be very careful about this. I know a man who spent $1200 USD hiring a researcher to look for his very common Manuel da Silva. He got back a report that pretty much looked at Ancestry sources and then recommended that he do a DNA test. The clincher? That researcher came to California, found me at a genealogy show, and asked me what to do. I wasn't very nice. I told her as a paid researcher she needed to find his family. I wasn't being paid to find his family. She wanted me to tell her what to do so she could collect the fee. So she types up a report to him, he finds me and asks for help. And the report quotes things from the Azores GenWeb that Kathy Cardoza and I wrote! He could have got that for free by being on this list! Once you get the village (via your paid researcher and if they find the correct ancestor for you), you would need to hire a researcher that does Portugal and Azores. You can find them all over the Internet that claim they can do it. There are a few on this list (and they may contact you privately). I'd use those, since they do contribute to this list and have a good track record. A list of the researchers can be found on the Azores GenWeb here: http://goo.gl/I7KYns Good luck, Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
