That sounds like a good idea because for a period of time, people living in the
west end of Bretanha (now called João Bom and Pilar) often received the
sacraments from the parish of Mosteiros until the Pilar Chapel came into use.In
his Apontamentos (1974) the late Father Luís Octávio dos Reis writes that even
after Pilar and João Bom was annexed to Ajuda, the chapel remained a suffragan
of Mosteiros for a while longer, until 1699. Given the distance from Pilar to
Ajuda, it would have made sense forsome of the people of Pilar and João Bom to
go to Mass in  Mosteiros.

If you find the parents for António and Maria Rosa, please let me know so I can
pass on the info on to Dr. Soares da Silva and also up date my data base.

Thank you, and enjoy Thanksgiving!

John

In Miguel Soares da Silva's Reconstituição das Famílias de Santo António, he
has Manuel, b. 20-2-1734 born to António de Aguiar and Maria Rosa, she being
from Bretanha. So we know he and Maria Rosa were living in Santo António in
1734. There is no marriage for them, but there are gaps in the marriage records
of S. António; however, there are no gaps beginning in 1729, so if they married
in S. António it was between 1719 and 1728 inclusive.
In 1737 an António de Aguiar is witness to a marriage in Santo António.

In Bretanha in that time period, there is only one António de Aguiar, marrying
in 1733, but to Paula Araújo Carvalho. (The records appear intact for that
period).

The António de Aguiar living in Monte de Santa Bárbara was married twice, but
neither wife was named Maria Rosa. That António's first wife was Maria de
Viveiros Frias (d. 1742) and the second wife was Maria de Viveiros de Arruda
(d. 1787).

I wish I could be of more help. Have you found a death record for Maria Rosa?

Rick,

I have indices for S. António. Who is it that you are looking for. I have
António de Aguiar living in Monte de Santa Bárbara. Let me know if I can help.

Thanks John.

I notice some parishes use more abbreviations than others. Most of the ones I
have worked with up to now used very few.

Santo Antonio (alem Capelas) makes the most sense. And that is the place I am
searching. I notice that some families moved around between Bretanha, Mosterios
and Ginetes. This Antonio Aguiar is named being baptized in  several places.
This birth record is the earliest that names Santo Antonio as his baptismal
parish.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to you also.

Rick:

I have not had a chance to look at the record. There are two S. António
parishes in S. Miguel, that I know of: Santo António (além Capelas) and Santo
António Nordestinho. The one near Capelas had a suffragan chapel, Santa Bárbara
do Monte, which is today a separate parish. To confuse things more, there is
also the parish of S. Bárbara near Ribeira Grande. My guess is that one in your
record is probably S. António além Capelas, Lugar do Monte (Santa Bárbara) but
again, I have not actually looked at the record.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi All
This has an abbreviation that I am not sure of On the 2nd line  “parochial de
S”to”  (Santo) Ant”o” (Antonio) lugar do M”mo” (???) S”to” (Santo?) e de”

It makes sense that this should be Santo Antonio in Santo Antonio, Ponta
Delgada but  the part Lugar do M”mo” has me confused.
