Births are registered where they occur. So, now a days, all those children from
Bretanha, for example, have birth records saying they were born in Ponta
Delgada, which of course is where the maternity ward is located. So unless an
expectant mother went to S. Miguel for delivery, the birth would not be
recorded there.

Researching in Santa Maria

Trying searching in Sao Miguel.  For as long as I can remember a high
percentage of births occur in Sao Miguel.  Its possible that the new borns get
registered in Sao Miguel but actually go right back to living in Santa Maria.
Just an idea.

Hi Richardo,  Thank you for your quick response to my query.  Yes, I am
positive that my grandmother. Maria Filomena Tavares do Rego was born in Santa
Maria, so, she is not the one you are looking for.  She does have the surnames
of Resendes and Chaves in her line though, so perhaps, someday we will find we
are distantly related.  (So far, I have found no connection to Santo Antonio
Alem Capelas)  Perhaps it is one of the other Resendes lines on Santa Maria
that is in my lineage.....
