It's no real big deal no matter whether they say matriz or not.
If you know the name of the church in the village or city in question, you're doing just fine.

I don't know the current status, but there is another matriz nobody mentioned.
Once upon a time, Sao Sebastiao, Terceira was the matriz. It says so in thousands of documents by that church and churches nearby. James Guilll in his history book mentioned it.
