As I was slowly translating the marriage record (link above) for Ana and
Estalano, the record went on to say that there had been a son born some
years before this marriage.

In the marriage record, it states (I think) that Daniel was born in the
night between the 18th and 19th of April in 1865. It tells me that he was
baptized, etc.

So, then I found the baptism record for Daniel (link above). Ana Bernarda
is listed as his mother, single, etc. His two godparents are named.

I can't get enough detail in the records, because of my limited
understanding of Portuguese, to understand what the priests in each record
are writing about each situation. These records are very clearly written...

Regarding the *baptism record* for Daniel, can someone give me the gist of
what the priest writes about the "single mom" situation. I don't see a
father listed, right? I know this situation is not uncommon, but this is
the first such record I have come across in my own research.

Regarding the *marriage record* for Ana and Estalano, is there more in the
section about Daniel than his birth and baptism information? I see that he
is recognized as a legitimate son. Would Estalano be his birth father, or
no?

If anyone can help me understand, in general, how situations like this were
handled back in the 1800's...and perhaps more specifically how the
situation with Ana, Estalano and Daniel is explained by the priests, I
would be most grateful.
