I know that the literal translation of soldado da marinha is "navy soldier". This occupation is listed in the marriage record for a 24-year-old young man (born 19 Oct 1866) from Aldeia Galega, Lisboa, Portugal who came to Santo Amaro, Pico and married, in 1891, my great grand aunt, who was born in Santo Amaro.<http://places.ancestry.com/index.aspx?tid=37799168&pid=28078869708&eid=240415611607>
Can someone direct me to a good reference to read about their navy and/ortell me a just a little about what their navy would have been like 123 years ago? -- For options, such as changing to List, Digest, Abridged, or No Mail (vacation) mode, log into your Google account and visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/Azores.
