I used Family Tree Maker for a number of years and for the most part I liked it. I started finding that there were things I could not do with it in searching and printing so after much consideration I got The Master Genealogist. The first thing is that it is not upgraded every year to a new version which you have to spend another $40 to get the latest version. I bought TMG about 4 years ago about $80 and since then FTM has changed times. So while the initial cost is higher in the long run it is cheaper. With FTM I never used the on line tree or signed up for Ancestry which I do not need.
The program is difficult to learn and takes time but the more I use it the better I like it. Cheri has been using it much longer then me so perhaps she will chime in.
