Interesting, I wonder if it's this steamer: http://njscuba.net/sites/site_li_sound.html (scroll down to Olinda).
It's marked as a Portuguese steamer, built in 1887 in England and sunk in 1895 in Fisher's island (NY). Best of all, it seems you can still dive in it. Somewhere else, I read you can still see the boiler at low tide, if the water has good visibility. Talk about a link to the past..
