A Cheri stated, Merced is a town in Merced County. I lived there , went to college there, and this is where my great grandpa came to, from Hawaii. Just to the south is Madera. and the north is Atwater and Modesto If I can help locate information, let me know, I have no problem digging around a little. I believe there is a Portuguese Historical Society, or at least a genealogical society in Merced. Here is the link to Merced. Genealogical Society:
http://mercedgenealogy.com/ They could help push you in the right direction. If they can't help you, I could check the Merced and Madera County records office for their marriage record. contact me if the genealogical society doesn't pan out.
