A Cheri stated, Merced is a town in Merced County. I lived there , went to 
college there, and this is where my great grandpa came to, from Hawaii.   
Just to the south is Madera. and the north is Atwater and Modesto  If I can 
help locate information, let me know, I have no problem digging around a 
little.   I believe there is a Portuguese Historical Society, or at least a 
genealogical society in Merced.  Here is the link to Merced.  Genealogical

They could help push you in the right direction.  If they can't help you, I 
could check  the Merced and  Madera County records office for their 
marriage record.  contact me if the genealogical society doesn't pan out.
